"Stay present. Stay focused."

This was my mantra on my weekend run.

At the beginning of my run, there were several thoughts coursing through my mind.

  • Stay the route I planned?
  • Can I complete the distance I really want to do or will I do the safe distance?
  • How did the week go?
  • Anticipating next week.
  • Family.
  • Friends.
  • My to-do list for the day.

As I found myself contemplating the logistics of future events- the errands I need to complete; getting to the grocery store before it gets too crowded; how should I commute to work on Monday?, I became aware that my pace quickened and I was beginning to breathe heavier.

"Stay Present. Stay Focused."

These words came to mind because on recent runs I have tripped myself up.
Sometimes successfully catching my near fall and sometimes not.

Stay present, Stay focused was initially about paying attention to my terrain.
However, I realized it applies to life and especially in this time of COVID-19.

Even though COVID-19 is an epic event that has affected everyone- emptied public places, filled hospitals, caused record-breaking drops in the economy, resulted in an enormously high number of deaths across the globe and separated us, we can’t lose hope.

"Stay Present. Say Focused."

Here are some observations I have made since the Corona Virus affected North America
  • More families have been spending time together out walking
  • We are finding new ways to come together - social media, video calls
  • more check-ins with old friends and acquaintances
  • Businesses reinforced ‘if you are sick stay home’

"Stay present. Stay focused."

We can wait for this pandemic to be over (whatever that looks like) or we can focus on making positive changes for ourselves in the midst of this crisis that can stick when we have pulled through.

We have time. How are we going to use it?
We aren’t distracted by shopping and all the other activities that keep us busy.
We have ALL had to slow down.

We have had to spend more time with ourselves and immediate families.
We have time to evaluate our habits and focus on what is really important to us.
What do we want to keep? What do we want to learn?

What we might want to keep:
  • Washing hands for 20secs may become a habit that sticks
  • Peoples attitude towards their health and healthcare may change for the better
  • Businesses that adapted so quickly to institute working from home, video calls and conference calls may be creative in changing the way going to work looks like moving forward.
  • Finding ways to be there even when we can't be there physically.

Our world has changed.

"The rug has been pulled out from under us, and then the floor, and then the ground." ~unknown

Are you going to trip yourself up or are you going to adapt?

"Stay present. Stay focused."

We can get through this.

We will be better for it if, and only if, we stop clinging to the past; allow ourselves to learn from the present, so we can create a better future for ourselves and those we care about.

"Stay present. Stay focused."

How can I help?

Stay safe! Be well!
