“The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word ‘crisis.'
One brush stroke stands for danger, the other for opportunity.
In a crisis, be aware of the danger—but recognize the opportunity.”
~President John F. Kennedy

This quote was my inspiration for this week’s post.
We have other idiomatic expressions with a similar meaning:
  • “Every cloud has a silver lining”
  • “It’s a blessing in disguise”
  • “No pain, no gain”

Every negative situation has the potential to result in or produce something positive or beneficial.

Do you believe this? How true is it for you?

My opinion?

I believe it.
Although I really do find it hard at times to see that silver lining or find the opportunity. Especially if you lose a loved one, if you unexpectedly lose your source of income or you are diagnosed with a severe illness.

Today is my father’s birthday.
It has been six months since he unexpectedly passed away. Even as I write this it doesn’t seem true.
Some days I still find myself saying “I haven’t spoken to Dad today. I have to give him a call.”
Yes, it still seems fresh.
What is the silver lining? Like I said it is sometimes hard to find.
However, when I think of the current global situation, the fact that we don’t have healthcare workers in and out of the house increasing the exposure of the virus to other family members is a significant one.
It doesn’t lessen the fact that I miss him.

The Corona Virus, COVID-19, has brought about a global crisis where lives have been lost, individuals have become sick & jobs have been lost.  Where our life as we have known it has been disrupted and in some cases shattered.

We have been brought to our knees and struggle to get back up with any conviction.
Some days we seem fine and are enjoying the fact that our vehicles get about 3 weeks to a gallon of gas, and that we have time to do more of what we enjoy.
Other days we think of those who have lost their lives, their jobs, and are frustrated that we still can’t find toilet paper or Clorex wipes.

We miss everyone. Even people we don’t like.

I encourage you to stay on your knees for a while.
Listen. Pray if you pray. But listen to those gentle nudges.
Those nudges that cause us to reflect, dream, and ask questions such as:
Is this all there is?
Is there a better way?
What if I could…?
Am I doing enough?
Am I enough?

We all receive those nudgings that encourage us to move towards a life we imagine to be an improved version of what we are currently experiencing.
But we turn a deaf ear and sigh, "we will get to it one day."

What if you used this time of crisis to consider those dreams, those "what if’s".
What do you need to do or change so that you can get up off your knees, stand up on your feet with strength and conviction to pursue the life you feel is worth living.

There is an opportunity here.
Life as we knew it is not going to be the same.
Re-entry into the workplace, schools, our social life are all going to look different.
As the authorities-that-be make these plans, it is time that you look at the plans for your life and what it should look and feel like as you re-emerge into a new way of living.

As many have come to realize in this time of pause, there are pursuits and emotional states that you would like to continue and some that you would like to leave behind.
What would you like to keep?
Reduced stress, increased connection with family, increased productivity, increased physical activity, time to be bake, sing, dance, garden, or other creative hobbies?

How would it even be possible?

I have an opportunity for you.

Every negative situation has the potential to result in or produce something positive or beneficial.

What was the opportunity found with my father’s passing? It has brought me closer to family members in different ways. It has also reminded me that I cannot take life, especially mine, for granted.
Live each day. Be grateful.
Look for the opportunities to live a life that I think is worth living.

This is your time to rise above the crisis and triumph.

Stay well!
